Paraguard IUD
Intown Primary Care is pleased to offer the Paragard copper IUD to women in our practice. Paragard is a non-hormonal intrauterine device that is 99% effective against pregnancy. Paragard is approved for use by women with a history of hypertension or blood clots. The IUD is placed in a simple office procedure and is effective immediately after insertion. Side effects such as spotting and abdominal cramping are common and often resolve within weeks of insertion. Paragard can be kept in place for up to 10 years which means you do not need to remember to take a pill daily or a shot every three months…your birth control is always working!
If plans change and you decide to have a child, Paragard is easily removed and fertility is regained that day…no waiting to come off hormones! Pregnancy is possible that month.
If you are interested in Paragard, several office visits are necessary. The first office visit is a consultation to learn more about the IUD and possible side effects. A pregnancy test will be done at this time to ensure a pregnancy has not already occurred. Your insurance will also be verified to determine coverage of the device and procedure. Paragard is widely covered by most insurance providers. The IUD will be placed at the second office visit, preferably when you are on your cycle. The last office visit will occur a month after insertion to confirm that the IUD has remained in place.
